Inside the bustling cafeteria of a local elementary school, students were enjoying their lunch and spending time with friends. However, one student sat at the lunch table without a lunch box or a tray from the lunch line.
“My family ran out of food,” Gabby confided in a counselor, explaining that they had run out of grocery money and that her parents wouldn't get paid again until Friday. Like one in six kids in Central Florida, she lives in a household experiencing food insecurity.
Thanks to the kindness and compassion of people like you, her school has a fully stocked school market filled with essentials like canned tuna, cereal, soup, fruit cups, rice, beans and snacks. School staff were able to send Gabby home with a couple of bags of groceries.
The following week, they received a thank you card that read, “You are the best! The food was very delicious, and it brings joy to my family. My favorite is the rice, the pudding, and everything!”
Because of you, students and families can access nutritious food at school markets.
