Transforming Lives: Dezmond’s Story

Share

Dezmond could not resist the allure of culinary arts.

“Cooking allows me to be creative, and I love whipping up dishes for others,” says Dezmond.

His passion for cooking soared during the pandemic when he spent days devising ramen dishes at home. After high school, Dezmond learned about Second Harvest's 16-week Culinary Training Program and enrolled to shape his love for cooking into a sustainable career.

Dezmond encountered his fair share of challenging recipes, like cream puffs that failed to rise as expected. He leaned on the guidance and mentorship of his chef instructors to understand his missteps.

“Sometimes the most important lesson is learned from a recipe that didn't work out,” Dezmond explains.

In addition to honing his culinary skills, Dezmond had the opportunity to develop invaluable people skills in communication and collaboration. He enjoys working alongside his fellow students to see how each person contributes their talents to create one harmonious dish.

“I'm excited to get to work and realize my potential,” says Dezmond, eager to embark on his new culinary career at a local theme park. “I want to see just how far I can go in this field.”

Thank you for supporting bright, new futures for students like Dezmond.
