Combating Childhood Hunger with Nutritious Meals This Summer

Share

For most kids, summer is a time away from the stress of school and full of sun-soaked adventure. But for others, it highlights a harsh reality. In Central Florida, one in five kids are facing hunger, an issue that is compounded when schools close for summer break.

That’s why Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida works with local parks and recreation centers, summer camps, and libraries to provide free meals for kids and teens each summer. As part of Summer BreakSpot, each location offers breakfast, lunch and/or snacks each weekday, depending on the site. You can find a location near you in three different ways:

Second Harvest’s Summer Food Service Program focuses not only on providing over 11,000 meals a day, but also on the importance of nutritional quality. The chefs at Second Harvest’s Mercy Kitchen take pride in well-balanced meals, incorporating a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. This approach introduces healthy eating habits, contributing to the long-term well-being of children.

“Yesterday we went to the library,” beamed Jeremiah, a rising sixth grader with a passion for math, science, and reading. “I can’t wait to go to the movies and the museum!”

Jeremiah's journey with the Soldiers to Scholars S.T.E.A.M summer camp has not only nourished his appetite but also ignited his curiosity. With a hunger for knowledge and an eagerness to learn, Jeremiah eagerly awaits his next adventure. Joining his fellow campers for lunch, he eagerly digs into a chicken and cheese flatbread sandwich with spinach and tomato.

Second Harvest Food Bank understands the critical role proper nutrition plays in a child's education and overall development. By providing essential meals through the Summer Food Service Program, they empower young minds like Jeremiah's to thrive academically and dream big for their futures.

Thank you for ensuring that children like Jeremiah have access to the resources they need to experience a worry-free, hunger-free summer.
