Added Storage Capacity Expands Reach in Marion County

Adding one refrigerated storage trailer at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida branch in Ocala has increased access to nutritious food for thousands of Marion County neighbors.

A second Conex box, an insulated, climate-controlled shipping container, was installed at the branch earlier this year to increase storage capacity for perishable foods such as produce, dairy products and meat that are the overflow from the facility’s main cooler and freezer.

At 48, Donald did not expect any more new, exciting opportunities.

While a student in Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Culinary Training Program, Donald was in a residential recovery program at a local rehabilitation center. His required work therapy in the kitchen there led to the discovery that he loved to cook.

Jaxon attends a summer camp program at Midway, which is one of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Summer Break Spot sites, where breakfast and lunch are served daily to all kids 18 and younger.

Helping Neighbors Find Stability Through Food

She moved to Central Florida as a single mother of three boys, working as a Certified Nursing Assistant in an assisted living facility.
Her circumstances were made even more challenging when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing chemotherapy treatment and a double mastectomy.
