Serving Up Smiles (and Hope) this Summer

Share

Summer, a season of joy and freedom for many children, also brings uncertainty and hunger for those who rely on school meals. In Central Florida, 1 in 5 children face hunger, a statistic often exacerbated when school is closed for summer break. This sudden increase in grocery needs can overwhelm families living paycheck to paycheck.

The unwavering support of our community and the dedication of volunteers make it possible for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and its partners to extend nutritious meals and peace of mind to kids and families during the summer. Volunteers at Mercy Kitchen help prepare and pack nutritious meals for delivery to 65 Summer Food Service partner locations across Central Florida. Meals are free for children 18 years of age and younger.

One of those sites is Hands of Hope America Community Center. The video from Spectrum News 13 below takes you behind the scenes in the Four Corners area of Lake County.

“It's been a blessing,” explains Evelisse Bookout, the founder of Hands of Hope America. “Having this food available is preventing food insecurity among working families trying to make rent, pay the light bill, and put food on the table.”

As the child of a single mom, Evelisse's family often relied on the kindness of neighbors. Today, she tries to pay it forward with a summer camp that focuses on mental health, physical fitness, critical thinking, community service, and life skills like team building and communication. The kids look forward to meals with their friends, too.

“I like the tacos; it's my favorite,” says Augustin. Today is his lucky day, and chicken tacos, milk, and fresh fruit are on the menu.

By providing food and hope for children and families this summer, you are helping them have carefree summer days and a brighter, healthier future.
