For Rita, food boxes are more than just helpful—they are essential for survival.
“If we didn’t have the boxes, some months we wouldn’t eat,” Rita said. She is retired, disabled, and homebound, and she and her husband deal with ongoing health problems without reliable transportation.
The boxes from Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, which include nonperishables like oatmeal, dried beans, canned tuna, and fresh produce, provide much-needed help.
“The last time the boxes came, we had just finished our last bag of dried beans. We’re really grateful,” Rita said.
She often has to choose between buying food and paying for medical care. After recent federal healthcare cuts, they now have to cover higher medical costs themselves.
“We were struggling even before the cuts,” Rita said. “Now, it’s survival. Without you, we literally would not eat.”
