Tony’s dedication makes an impact

Share

Tony Pelham, a retired software engineer turned writer and comedic playwright, traded computer flight simulations and virtual worlds for helping his community. Now a part of his weekly routine, Tony proudly wears his Second Harvest t-shirt and devotes his time to helping families facing hunger in Central Florida.

“Freedom from hunger is one of the most important things to maintain in people and their families’ lives,” expresses Tony.

Tony’s journey as a dedicated volunteer began when he joined the Central Florida Freethought Community for a volunteer shift sorting through food donations at the food bank. Tony enjoyed how well-organized the organization was and decided to return to Second Harvest to volunteer independently. He has been a valued volunteer for two years, accumulating over 240 hours.

Primarily lending a hand in the main warehouse, Tony’s tasks consist of dry food sorting, packing, and stacking boxes for distribution. His unwavering commitment ensures food donations are ready for people facing hunger in the community.

Besides knowing that his efforts are helping families facing hunger in Central Florida, one of Tony’s favorite parts of volunteering is the people he has met. Over his time volunteering, he has formed new friendships with fellow volunteers. They often coordinate social events, and his new friends have even enjoyed three of his plays performed at local theaters! Being driven by the same goals and after spending so much time together, it is no surprise that new friendships form through the food bank.

The fight against hunger fosters hope and a sense of community. See for yourself on a volunteer shift this spring.

Individual and group volunteers are welcome.
