Stories of Hope

Serving others through food

Share

Jeremyโ€™s life is defined by service.

โ€œVolunteering is my greatest joy,โ€ explains Jeremy. โ€œI like serving my fellow man, especially veterans because I am a disabled veteran.โ€

His service began as an Eagle Scout and later as an Air Force linguist. Since returning to civilian life, Jeremy has found a supportive community and dedicates his time to ensuring that veterans have access to transportation, medical care, and food.

โ€œI like to help others because I have been helped,โ€ adds Jeremy. As a recipient, supporter, and advocate, Jeremy gladly shares his personal experience with others to reduce the stigma of asking for help.

Jeremy knows that there are a lot of families asking for help this holiday season. 1 in 8 Central Floridians โ€“ including working parents, kids, seniors, and veterans – are facing hunger. As he sorts food donations at Second Harvest Food Bankโ€™s warehouse and loads boxes of food into recipientsโ€™ cars at a monthly food distribution, he thinks about the people he talks to in the distribution line and how much this food means to them. And how much it means to his family.

โ€œWhen I take food home to my family, it helps my parents a lot,โ€ says Jeremy. โ€œMy dad is always grateful for the meat. I, myself, look forward to the cereal.โ€
