Hunger doesn’t take a summer break

Share

It's officially summer. While school is in recess, there's one thing that doesn't take a summer break: hunger.

When school lets out for summer, so do the nutritious meals many kids rely on. Without free and reduced-priced breakfasts and lunches in the school cafeteria, a harsh reality sets in for many Central Florida families. The additional cost of groceries in the summer for families living paycheck to paycheck can be the difference between keeping the lights on and having enough food on the table.

With your support, kids and families can turn to summer meal sites where nutritious breakfasts and lunches are served weekdays all summer long. Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida distributes meals at 60 Summer Break Spot sites where kids and teens ages 18 and under receive meals, no questions asked.

Volunteers at Mercy Kitchen help prep and pack thousands of meals each day. After meals are prepped, a fleet of trucks, vans and trailers travels across Central Florida to deliver meals to summer camps, libraries, community centers and other locations where kids can safely eat and play. Watch the video below to see this impactful work in action.

Hunger doesn’t take a summer break, and neither does Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. You can join the fight against summer hunger as a volunteer, donor and advocate.

Help make this a hunger-free summer.
