Food is Success: Shavanee’s Story

Share

“You can make something out of your life and enjoy your career,” says Shavanee, who graduated from high school without a clear career path. She knew she needed to work to help support her family, but with no work experience or skills training, the job search was an uphill battle.

She reflected on the vibrant flavors of childhood in Guyana and sought out Second Harvest's Culinary Training Program to help hone her passion for cooking.

Shavanee's journey through the 16-week program was not just about acquiring culinary skills. It was a transformative experience that nurtured her passion, bolstered her confidence, and prepared her for a successful career. From mastering spices to ensuring kitchen safety, every lesson was a step towards her personal and professional growth.

“I wanted a good first job where I could be creative, cook good food, and make people happy,” she says, grateful for the opportunity to work in a theme park restaurant.

The culinary program was a launchpad for a promising career for Shavanee. Recognized as a Top Student at graduation, she has since been promoted and is eagerly looking forward to another advancement opportunity next year. Her dream of becoming an executive chef is no longer a distant aspiration but a goal she is pursuing daily with dedication and hard work.

“Without you, I wouldn't be where I am, and my family wouldn't be where we are,” Shavanee expresses with heartfelt gratitude.

The Culinary Training Program is transforming lives.
