Expanded Brevard Distribution Center Increases Fresh Produce Distribution and Volunteer Engagement

Share

A year after opening the new Brevard County distribution center, more food is reaching families most at risk of hunger across the Space Coast.

In 2025, Second Harvest provided enough food for 5.9 million meals in Brevard County. This is a 37% increase from the 4.3 million meals distributed in 2024 at the previous location.

The new, larger facility in Melbourne made it possible to increase access to fresh produce by 449% compared to last year.

Beyond increasing the ability to distribute more food, the Brevard Distribution Center created new opportunities for community members to directly participate in local hunger relief efforts. Last year, more than 2,260 volunteers contributed nearly 5,900 hours of service by helping to sort, pack and distribute food that reached thousands of Brevard County children, seniors and veterans.

The new location helps Second Harvest support local partners more efficiently and provides a central place for volunteers, donors, and community groups to join the fight against hunger.

“This first year has shown what’s possible when a community comes together to address hunger,” said Derrick Chubbs, President and CEO at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. “As demand continues to grow, this facility allows us to respond faster and more efficiently to the needs of our neighbors.”

Thanks to community support, the first year of operations made a significant impact in the fight against hunger, providing more meals, fresh food, and volunteer opportunities than ever before.
