Driving Out Hunger

Share

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is a time to pause and celebrate professional truck drivers' commitment to delivering essential resources. The work of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida's truck driver team is not just critical, but also deeply impactful. They are the ones who ensure that food donations from retail partners, farmers, and manufacturers reach our neighbors facing hunger, making a significant difference in our community.

Drivers rise early each morning to travel Central Florida streets and highways, driving hundreds of thousands of miles annually.

“I lost count a long time ago,” says Devoy, a Second Harvest driver for the last 22 years.

There's a need out there. There's a family that's a paycheck away from hunger”

Devoy’s personal journey tells a story of dedication and compassion. He gets up before dawn, loads a semi-truck filled with nonperishable and fresh foods and delivers each order safely to schools, food pantries, and churches across the seven-county service area. From there, kids, families, and seniors receive the nutritious food they need to thrive at local school markets, drive-thru mobile food distributions, and neighborhood food pantries.

Go behind the scenes with Devoy on his daily route in the video below.

While there are many opportunities for a professional truck driver with a commercial driver's license, Devoy says he fell in love with the mission at Second Harvest. He loves that his job gives him a chance to reach out to so many in the community,

“There's a need out there. There's a family that's a paycheck away from hunger,” says Devoy, adding, “As much as you can help, do your part and help.”
