Volunteers Make a Difference during AAPI Heritage Month

Volunteers lend their helping hands six days a week at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. During Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, many dedicated individuals and volunteer groups work together to make a difference in the fight against hunger.

One organization making a difference is LUNA Interest Group, a multicultural Asian interest group at the University of Central Florida.

Volunteering Feels Really, Really Good

When you volunteer, you are helping your neighbors face challenges you may not be able to imagine. When you volunteer, you are building a better community. When you volunteer, you become an agent of change in the world. When you volunteer, it feels really, really good.

Volunteers Inspire Change

As a teenager, I participated in an exercise to learn the importance of teamwork. We arranged four chairs facing each other and sat in them sideways so that we could recline. When the chairs were removed we did not fall because we supported each other.

We borrowed strength from each other to keep from toppling over. It’s a great exercise to teach people of any age about teamwork and an analogy for how we can affect the world around us. I am sure we are not strangers to the challenging situations that many of our friends and neighbors face daily.
