Volusia Residents Receive Relief at Food Distributions

Many Central Florida families are just one extra or unexpected expense away from facing food insecurity, like Hector found out. Events like hurricanes can cause residents to miss work or incur expenses for home repairs.
The mobile distribution that helped the couple get through their transition period was one of six mobile distributions in October and November in Volusia County, made possible by county grant funding that Second Harvest received to continue supporting residents impacted by Hurricane Ian. The financial toll of a hurricane or other disaster can often be felt long after the storm passes.
Celebrating Veterans Voices

This Veterans Day, Second Harvest recognizes and amplifies the voices of individuals connected to the food bank who have served our country and their communities.
The reality is that in the fight against hunger, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida provides food resources to Central Florida veterans and military families facing food insecurity and works toward connecting them to the resources and benefits they need to thrive. Additionally, veterans who have served their country go on to serve their community through fighting hunger. These are their stories
Food Fuels Learning at Kids Cafes

The first thing the kids who attend Club Esteem do when they get there every afternoon is grab their meal.
“It’s just like when they’re at home and coming home from school,” said Ellena Little, Director of Club Esteem. “The first thing is, ‘I’m hungry; I want a snack.’”
Club Esteem is an after-school program in Melbourne where about 90 kids from kindergarten through 8th grade come for activities and tutoring. It’s a Second Harvest Kids Café site, and the food bank provides all the after-school meals.

It was Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s ninth year as the Celebrated Charity of Choice for the event. The partnership with runDisney provides many opportunities for Second Harvest to raise awareness about the fight against hunger in Central Florida.
Thanks to the support of the participants and runDisney, more than 280,932 meals will be provided to children, families, and seniors in Central Florida who face hunger.
