Blandinaโ€™s interest in cooking began in high school, where she spent two years taking culinary classes. The first year covered the basics, but by her senior year, she was in the kitchen trying out recipes, building new skills, and making real dishes.

โ€œIt really brought out the joy of cooking. It was really enjoyable for me, and just to learn new things, because I donโ€™t really cook at home all that much. Being in the class, it was really fun,โ€ she recalled.

Creating a Legacy: Jeanโ€™s Story of Starting Over

Starting over isnโ€™t easy, but sometimes itโ€™s necessary. Jean left his home country of Haiti to escape political violence and seek stability and opportunity in the United States. Arriving here, he felt like he was beginning again at zero. It was a hard truth to accept but rather than let it discourage him, he saw it as a chance to build something better.

Cooking Up Second Chances: 13 Graduates Begin Their Next Chapter

On Saturday, November 3, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida recognized 13 students from its Culinary Training Program during a graduation ceremony. Food bank staff, family, friends and employers joined the celebration to recognize each student’s achievements. In addition to learning hands-on food preparation and gaining kitchen training similar to that of professional culinary institutions, students spend part of their days in the classroom, acquiring career and life skills to help them pursue entry-level jobs in the food industry.

Kalei never set out with a specific goal to become a chef, but as she reflects, itโ€™s clear how each experience pulled her closer to the kitchen. Whatever she ended up doing, her goal was to be successful. Her passion for cooking ignited at the tender age of five, standing side by side with her dad. Shared meals became their special bond, an early spark that only grew brighter.
