Finding Purpose: Kalei’s Journey from Kitchen Curiosity to Culinary Career

Share

Kalei never set out with a specific goal to become a chef, but as she reflects, it’s clear how each experience pulled her closer to the kitchen. Whatever she ended up doing, her goal was to be successful. Her passion for cooking ignited at the tender age of five, standing side by side with her dad. Shared meals became their special bond, an early spark that only grew brighter.

In high school, Kalei hadn’t planned to pursue cooking, until her culinary teacher noticed her talent and sparked something deeper. After graduation, with college out of reach and no clear direction, she began working part-time while also starting a small meal prep business. A chance encounter with that same teacher changed everything. When she mentioned cost was holding her back, he reminded her of Second Harvest’s free Culinary Training Program. The next day, she applied.

While in the program, Kalei discovered not just culinary techniques but a true sense of community. “It feels like a family,” she says. “Even when we don’t always see eye to eye, we work together and keep the kitchen moving.”

From mastering knife skills to exploring global cuisines, every lesson challenges her abilities while bolstering her confidence. “I’m capable of doing so much more,” she admits. “I used to feel shy in the kitchen, but now, I’m ready to show the world who I am.” This blossoming self-confidence empowers her to take charge during busy services and forge deeper connections with her classmates—a chemistry she plans to carry into her future career.

When asked what the program has done for her, Kalei responds without hesitation: “It’s transformed my life for the better. It’s made me realize I can achieve far more than I ever thought possible.” Looking ahead, she dreams of launching her career at an Orlando theme park, where she can serve up dishes seasoned with skill and newfound courage.
